Flooding to Glasgow's south side avoided

On the evening of 4 February 2011 the water level in the White Cart Water at several locations was within millimetres of spilling out of the channel and affecting significant numbers of properties.

The peak flow measured at SEPA's Overlee Gauging Station was around 71 cumecs.

If the three flood storage areas had not been operational the peak flow would have been considerably higher and would have exceeded 100 cumecs. The event on 4 February 2011 had a return period of between a 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 years.

If the storage areas had not been operational water levels would have been up to 500mm higher through the urban reach of the White Cart Water and would have led to flood damages in the region of £1M to £3M.
